Sanction to this was conveyed in Mr. Chamberlain's Despatch No. 4 of the 3rd January, 1902, and the amount was paid to the Institution in March, 1903. In the meantime the Government Nurses for private nursing had left that employment in June, 1901, since when this nursing has been carried on under the direction of the Hongkong Nursing Institution which in 1905 changed its name to the Hongkong Branch of the Colonial Nursing Association. A copy of their last report is enclosed.

The Association has of course done nothing towards the training of Probationers which was continued in the Government Civil Hospital, in the vicinity of which quarters were provided for them in 1905-1906 on the site originally proposed for the Training Institute. The question of training these Probationers was dealt with fully in my Despatch No. 378 of the 22nd October, 1904. Since that date one of the Probationers has qualified as "Nurse" and may after a period of 2 years' service as such be brought on to the permanent establishment as "Staff Nurse".
